The video is a new promotional film from the British group that campaigns aggressively to end airport expansion, citing it as a prime culprit in the earth's changing climate. According to the video, "An average European flight produces over 400 kg. of greenhouse gases for every passenger.

A good video but by pumping up the drama of an ad, you increase the risk of viewers feeling manipulated and dismissing it as pure propaganda. Or lapsing into highly questionable failures of tact and taste in pursuit of 'edginess'.

Say no to asbos for downloaders.

The internet is such a huge part of life that Mandelson's plans to cut people off for copyright breach is a clear restriction of liberty.

UK’s Terrifying Anti-Piracy Plans Leak.

Tomorrow morning Lord Mandelson will present the Digital Economy Bill to the public, which among other things is aimed at reducing illicit file-sharing.

According to parts of the bill that leaked today, the legislation could lead to jail terms for file-sharers and unprecedented power for the entertainment industries.  Read more »

Wide Dissatisfaction with Capitalism — Twenty Years after Fall of Berlin Wall.

Twenty years after the fall of the Berlin Wall, a new BBC World Service global poll finds that dissatisfaction with free market capitalism is widespread, with an average of only 11% across 27 countries saying that it works well and that greater regulation is not a good idea.

In only two countries do more than one in five feel that capitalism works well as it stands—the US (25%) and Pakistan (21%).  Read more »

The universe is beige!

With its jewel-like star clusters, swirling galaxies and orange Suns, pictures of the universe are usually impossibly beautiful and brightly coloured.

But as Nasa has pointed out the real colour of outer space would not look out of place on an office wall: it is beige.

After studying the colour of light emitted by 200,000 galaxies scientists have combined them to produce the colour, they have dubbed 'cosmic latte'.

Other names suggested for it were 'univeige' and 'skyvory'.  Read more »
